Abstract

Car-pooling is a possible solution to lack of transportation convenience faced by Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) community. The remote location of the university creates the need to travel very occasionally in order to run errands. Public transport is scarce and often requires transits to be made. Observation indicates the popular mode of transport in UTP is by car but often with vacant passenger seats. Car-pooling has potential to be popularized. Obstacles are difficulty of offering and finding rides especially within a short-notice. Existing systems are mostly just forums or data input and retrieval systems. The proposed system finds matching rides automatically everytime there is a new request or offer entry and inform both parties immediately using push strategy. This paper discusses the underlying pervasive technology to make carpooling application more practical.
