Abstract
This paper presents a review on published and unpublished literature of the geomorphology, sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Perak River and its coastal plain areas which located on the west flank of Peninsular Malaysia. This includes satellite images interpretation and compilation of the borehole data on the sedimentation and Young Quaternary stratigraphy of the coastal areas around Perak River. It is an attempt to unravel the controls on the evolution of the river and the sedimentation on the coastal-deltaic plain of the larger part of Perak. The satellite images were use to investigate the present geographical, geomorphologic changes of the river and the Quaternary successions of the coastal plain and delta. It shows that the river can be divided four geographic regions; lower and upper parts for both of the upstream and coastal areas. The channel pattern occurred along Perak River varies from straight-braided to meandering. The river flow changes it direction from north to south before drifted easterly to the west at Teluk Intan. There are five main evolutions occurred in the downstream of Perak River.
