Abstract
Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) is used to measure spherical droplet velocity while Phase Doppler Anemometer (PDA) measures diameter and concentration of spray droplets. The combination of the two systems, which use laser light scattering principles, provides a useful tool for the study of spray characteristics and fluid flow behavior, especially in complicated measurement situations. This paper presents an overview of the combined LDA-PDA, its capabilities and applications, and the research works that will be and are progressing at Universiti Teknologi Petronas, who owns the system. Being a non-intrusive method, measurements using LDA-PDA can be made without requiring any sensor to be placed in the flow field. The ability of the system to accurately measure spray droplet size and velocities in three components at very high temporal and spatial resolutions distinguishes its capability against other measurement devices that have similar purposes. With the availability of this state-of-the-art facility, various engineering researches in Malaysia can benefit from it, namely in internal combustion, fluid dynamics, spray painting and chemical processes.
