Batik Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Rembang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia, encounter challenges in integrating cleaner production methods to enhance their operational efficacy, aligning with governmental endeavors towards fostering a greener industrial milieu. However, not all Batik SMEs in Rembang Regency comprehensively understand the implementation of clean and sustainable production protocols. Segregating SMEs based on variables such as chemical usage, waste management, and energy efficiency holds promise in offering diverse perspectives on the positioning of each Batik SME in Rembang Regency. Hence, this study aims to formulate strategies and policies by delineating the performance of individual Batik SMEs in Rembang Regency, explicitly focusing on cleaner production adoption. Employing a quantitative approach, data was gathered from 42 Batik SMEs in Rembang Regency and subjected to analysis utilizing the k-means clustering technique. The findings of this research produced 2 clusters: cluster 0, which was called high adoption of cleaner production and consisted of 9 Batik SMEs, and cluster 1, which was called low adoption of cleaner production and consisted of 33 Batik SMEs. By discerning the performance levels of individual Batik SMEs in implementing cleaner production adoption, stakeholders can tailor strategies and craft policies to foster heightened adoption of cleaner production practices among Batik SMEs in Indonesia. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
