Combustion is considered as the main method of power generation of the free piston linear generator (FPLG), however other existing method such as expansion of the FPLG using compressed air will also be applicable in generating electricity. In this article, the effect of varying the valve opening frequency onto the performance of the FPLG was experimentally investigated whereby the generator unit of the FPLG was assembled with metal plates, and a constant compressed air pressure of 5 bar was supplied throughout the investigation. From the investigation, by increasing the valve opening frequency, the translator speed increased which led to an overall increase in both, the average power output and the peak power output. But, due to a higher valve opening frequency which reflects on the decrement of injection duration, the stroke of the piston decreased with increasing frequency. © 2023, Institute of Technology PETRONAS Sdn Bhd.
