Oceanic litters such as abandoned fishing nets endangers marine ecosystem. The nets, which consist of nylon, are mainly lost nets which occurs due to harsh weather or discarded by fishermen. Therefore, this study explores the potential usage of recyclable nylon fish nets as substitute polymer for fabrication of electrospun nanofiber membrane (NFM). Results show that nylon 6,6 waste NFM has relatively similar properties with the pure nylon 6,6 NFM. The nylon 6,6 waste NFM shows similar functional groups as the pure one with the fiber diameter around 171.00±80.00?nm and pore size of 0.2?μm. The contact angle is also found to be at 0° indicating the superhydrophilicity of the membrane. Besides, it is found that the hydraulic performance is much higher than the pure nylon 6,6 NFM (clean water permeability of 1133?L/m2.h.bar) where the waste NFM poses high permeabilities of 6000?L/m2.h.bar for clean water, respectively. Overall, it can be concluded that, nylon 6,6 waste is an excellent raw polymer substitute and highly feasible to be used for wastewater filtration, an approach that solve both the issue of waste nylon 6,6 and wastewater pollutions. © 2022 Author(s).
