Abstract

Montmorillonite is a naturally occurring clay mineral which can be used for different industrial applications. Researchers have been exploring the potential of montmorillonite in environment engineering applications comprising of removal of different organic and inorganic contiminats using structurally modified montmorillonite. These modifications include intercalation, pillaring and acid activation process of clay. Such modifications are aimed in improving the adsorption capacities of montmorillonite towards these contaminants and pollutants. In this review retention and removal of different inorganic and organic contaminants and pollutants using modified montmorillonite clay have been presented.
