Abstract

This paper reports the results of a study that sought to find out the feelings of Malay undergraduates towards writing in English, the difficulties they faced in writing in English, and their perceptions about what would help them improve their writing. It was conducted at a private university where the language of instruction is English. Malay students were chosen because the majority of the students at this university are Malays and also Malay students are the ones who usually face problems in writing in English. This is based on the writer's experience in teaching Technical and Professional Writing course to undergraduates and also based on the responses of the students when asked about writing in English. The study was alsoaimed at helping teachers contribute towards the development and enhancement of the students' writing ability, and motivate them to write well in English.
