Removal of heavy metals from industrial effluent have been a subject of interest for researchers all around the globe, due to the industrial pollution which become a major cause of environmental degradation. The use of absorbent to extract those heavy metals can be enhanced with the addition of ionic liquids. The objective of this study is to improve the extraction efficiency of manganese (Mn) from industrial effluent using alginate beads loaded with imidazolium based ionic liquid. The strength of the beads was enhanced with the addition of polyvinyl alcohol. An extraction efficiency of 90 was achieved. The hard beads have exceptional mechanical strength making them highly suitable to used in harsh conditions during the extraction process. Out of the two adsorption isotherms applied, the Langmuir model provides the best fit compared to the Freundlich model. The modified beads can meet variety of requests/applications and exhibits high metal adsorption ability. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
