Abstract

Total Knee Replacement is a corrective medical procedure which is performed to remove the damaged bones and cartilage of knee with osteoarthritis, and replaced with implant components. The disparity in anatomy between western and Asian on another hand has created some issues regarding the fit of the knee implant and affected the living quality of the patients during post Total Knee Replacement stage. In conjunction with the development of patient specified prostheses for several medical applications, a custom fitted femoral component was developed by utilizing Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine images of MRI scanned knee.Stress distribution analysis at the maximum flexion angle was done on the femoral component to analyse the stress value and distribution in comparison with the existing femoral component used by a local hospital. The results showed that the Von Misses stress value recorded for the existing femoral component is 81.83 lower than custom fitted femoral component, due the design features of the existing femoral component. The result recorded that successfully highlighted the critical areas of the custom fitted femoral component and it was concluded that the femoral component requires design enhancement to be deemed as feasible for Total Knee Replacement. © 2023, Institute of Technology PETRONAS Sdn Bhd.
